چکیده

We present Berkeley Illinois Maryland Association (BIMA) millimeter interferometer observations of giant molecular clouds (GMCs) along a spiral arm in M31. The observations consist of a survey using the compact configuration of the interferometer and follow-up, higher-resolution observations on a subset of the detections in the survey. The data are processed using an analysis algorithm designed to extract GMCs and correct their derived properties for observational biases thereby facilitating comparison with Milky Way data. The algorithm identifies 67 GMCs of which 19 have sufficient signalto-noise to accurately measure their properties. The GMCs in this portion of M31 are indistinguishable from those found in the Milky Way, having a similar size-line width relationship and distribution of virial parameters, confirming the results of previous, smaller studies. The velocity gradients and angular momenta of the GMCs are comparable to the values measured in M33 and the Milky Way; and, in all cases, are below expected values based on the local galactic shear. The studied region of M31 has a similar interstellar radiation field, metallicity, Toomre Q parameter, and midplane volume density as the inner Milky Way, so the similarity of GMC populations between the two systems is not surprising. Comparing Giant Molecular Clouds in M31, M33 & the Milky Way

We present new observations of a 2 field in the north-eastern spiral arm of M31. In the 0.8 × 3.6 kpc mosaicked region, we have detected six distinct, large complexes of molecular gas, most of which lie along the spiral arm dust lane or in the vicinity of HII regions. The mean properties of these complexes are as follows: D∼57±13 pc, ∆V∼ 6.5±1.2 km s, MCO∼3.0±1.6 ×10 5 M⊙, peak brightness tempe...

Comparative Analysis of Molecular Clouds in M31, M33, and the Milky Way

We present BIMA observations of a 20 field in the northeastern spiral arm of M31. In this region we find six giant molecular clouds (GMCs) that have a mean diameter of 57 13 pc, a mean velocity width of 6:5 1:2 km s , and a mean molecular mass of 3:0 1:6 ð Þ ; 10 M . The peak brightness temperature of these clouds ranges from 1.6 to 4.2 K. We compare these clouds to clouds in M33 observed by Wi...

Face-on Barred Spiral Structure of Molecular Clouds in M31's Bulge

By image processing and color excess analyses of B, V, R, and I-band CCD images of the central region of M31 taken with the Kiso 105-cm Schmidt telescope, we found a bar of 200 pc length. We also found a more extended " face-on " spiral feature of dark clouds, which appear to be connected to this bar and is probably an out-of-plane structure. The 12 CO(J = 1 − 0)-line emission was detected from...

Tracing Molecular Gas in the Andromeda Galaxy

We present results from an Andromeda Galaxy (M31) survey of star-forming regions based on 24 μm luminosity for H2O masers, NH3(1,1) and NH3(2,2) lines, and Hydrogen recombination lines (H66α). Although five H2O masers were detected in the initial survey of 206 regions towards M31, we do not detect additional masers in a follow up survey of 300 similar luminous 24 μm regions. We do not detect NH...

LABOCA observations of giant molecular clouds in the southwest region of the Small Magellanic Cloud

Context. The amount of molecular gas is a key to understanding the future star formation in a galaxy. Because H2 is difficult to observe directly in dense and cold clouds, tracers such as the CO molecule are used. However, at low metallicities especially, CO only traces the shielded interiors of the clouds. In this context, millimeter dust emission can be used as a tracer to unveil the total de...
